The first Global Diaspora Summit took place in 2022, resulting in the Dublin Declaration–a plan of action for diaspora organizations to institutionalise and operationalise diaspora capitals (human, economic, social and cultural) across policies, programmes and partnerships in a coherent and consistent framework.

It focused on coordination in diasporas’ countries of residence and a sub-granting mechanism that allows to strengthen their humanitarian interventions in countries of origin

Using Facebook Ads for Diaspora Engagement on Humanitarian Assistance in the Philippines

IOM partnered with Meta’s Data for Good unit to develop and test a pair of online campaigns to raise awareness about the impact of safe shelter on women and girls in the Philippines. This case study details how the campaigns reached over 10 million people and successfully demonstrated knowledge transfer and engagement with U.S.-based Filipino diaspora communities. 

Diaspora Engagement in Shelter & Settlements

This case study explains the various activities across multiple phases of IOM’s Safe Shelters Project, funded by USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance. It highlights key examples where diaspora members have directly engaged in DRR interventions, under the Safer Shelters project. It includes activities implemented in partnership between IOM and U.S.-based diaspora organizations to support communities in the Philippines, Bangladesh, and Haiti.

Capacity Building Resources for Diaspora

This toolkit's aim is to provide useful guidelines to other IOM’s Missions, UN Agencies, associations (CSOs, NGOs) or institutions that wish to replicate and implement the A.MI.CO. program (Migrants’ Associations for Co-Development). It stems from the desire to systematize IOM Italy’s ten-year experience in building capacity and providing technical assistance to migrants’ associations as transnational actors in the field of international cooperation.

iDiaspora is a global engagement and knowledge exchange hub for diaspora communities and those looking to engage with them. It provides comprehensive, regularly updated data and analysis relevant to diaspora communities, policy makers, NGO actors, and showcases successful diaspora actions and partnerships.

Trainings

Shelter & Settlements Training Package and Facilitator's Guide


This is a joint training package geared towards diaspora professionals in order to increase technical knowledge and capacities on safer shelter and settlements. It includes detailed modules, pre-tests and post-test, PowerPoints and handouts, and interactive simulations for group settings. The package and associated Facilitator’s Guide were co-developed by IOM, Habitat for Humanity International, and the Global Shelter Cluster.  

Shelter & Settlement Assistance Training for Diasporas

This is a 25-minute, self-paced, online course for diaspora actors to learn about how to more effectively contribute to humanitarian assistance before, during and after crises, help communities access safe shelters, and make their communities more resilient. This course is designed for both new and experienced diaspora actors who are interested in shelter assistance or implement shelter programming. 

Diaspora Humanitarian Training

This is a 125-minute, self-paced, online course developed by DEMAC in cooperation with the Humanitarian Leadership Academy for diaspora responders as well as project managers, managers, volunteers, local responders and anyone wanting entry level insight into the humanitarian sector.
